Tips for Keeping Your Windscreen Clear This Summer
Learn our helpful tips and tricks you can use to keep your windshield clear for all your summer journeys.

This summer, you might be thinking about heading out on a road trip. While it can be tempting to pack up and go as soon as those first rays break through, preparation is important.

In the summer, you’ll find your windscreen can often become dirtier with less rain to give it a clean. This means things like dirt, dust, and insects can easily build up and impact your visibility.

Read on for our top tips on keeping your windscreen clear this summer.

1. Replace your wiper blades

If it’s been a while since you last replaced your wiper blades, you’ll want to make this a priority. It’s generally recommended to replace your wiper blades every six months or 6,000 miles – whatever the season.

Extreme heat can cause the rubber in your wiper blades to deteriorate faster – one of many reasons why your blades may need replacing this summer

When left, this can then cause damage to your windscreen and insufficient cleaning, which impacts your visibility.

Make sure to order your replacement wiper blades if you notice any signs of visible damage. If you need help choosing your wipers, use our handy vehicle input tool to shop wipers guaranteed to fit.

2. Top up your screenwash

Summer heat can cause your washer fluid to evaporate faster. That’s why it’s a good idea to top up your screenwash ahead of the summer season.

You can get specific summer screenwash made to withstand warmer temperatures or try our screen wash pods. These can be popped straight into your washer fluid reservoir and combined with water to produce up to five litres of screen wash.

They are easily dissolved with no mixing required, and they are also smear-free giving you better cleaning results. This is especially handy in reducing glare from the summer sun, which can be caused by an unclear screen.

They’re also environmentally friendly, reducing the use of plastic bottles. So you can still do your bit for the environment!

3. Clean your windscreen regularly

An obvious way to keep your windshield clear this summer is to clean it regularly. In the summer, your windscreen will need cleaning more often with bugs, dust, dirt, and pollen flying around.

It’s important to keep your windshield clean as a build-up of dirt or debris could cause damage to your wiper blades.

When not on the road, make sure to give your car a regular clean. Pay special attention to both your front and rear windscreens, and your windows and mirrors.

You can clean your windows using water and car shampoo. For a dry finish, use a microfibre cloth to absorb any water residue, which can leave watermarks when left to dry naturally in the sun.

4. Park in the shade if possible

On particularly warm days, try to park your vehicle in the shade if you can. When left in direct sunlight, this can often bake dirt and dust into your windscreen making it more difficult to clean.

Parking in the shade will also help to protect your wiper blades from heat damage. This, in turn, will help you to enjoy more efficient cleaning on the road by keeping your wipers in good condition.

If you can, try to avoid parking under trees which may drop leaves and tree sap onto your windscreen too.
